It is eight more weeks until my daughter has a week's break for Thanksgiving, and then I think the lessons will be hard to manage with the thoughts of Christmas round the corner.
Apart from distractions, flexi-schooling has the added challenge of working to two timetables - mine and the the local high school and extracurricular commitments. This week, we lost our opportunity to work on IGCSE Science, Geography and English Literature because of time demands from Color Guard. We will just have to make the classes up later.
In the meantime, this week we covered the following:
IGCSE Maths (0580)
Pemberton, (2012) Essential Mathematics for Cambridge IGCSE: Extended, [ISBN 9780199128747] pp. 10 -13
Past Paper 2
How we covered the material:Continued working on Past Paper 2 to get a baseline score, and also quickly worked through fractions.
How I judged knowledge/skill acquisition: checking answers as we went through exercises; addressing mistakes as they occurred (the usual, very active assessment)
IGCSE English Language (0500)
Past Paper 3
How we covered the material: Focused on using a past paper 3 as a baseline score but also to generate discussion about directed writing and compositions (essays). Once the skill was understood, my daughter answered the question on directed writing.
How I judged knowledge/skill acquisition: Discussion about directed writing and speeches helped me understand my daughter's readiness to tackle the past paper question. Now I just have to grade it and give her annotated feedback.
IGCSE History (0580)
Cantrell, J. (2013) 20th Century History for Cambridge IGCSE [ISBN 9780199136360] pp. 2 - 22
McCleavy (2005) Twentieth Century History: International Relations since 1919 [ISBN 9780521893503]pp. 12 - 29
Shepperson (Ed.) (2003) GCSE History: Complete Revision and Practice [ISBN 9781841463759], pp. 55 - 61
How we covered the material: Introduced the topic of the peace treaties. Looked at the materials, starting with Cantrell's chapter (closely linked to the syllabus).
How I judged knowledge/skill acquisition: through discussion for topics raised from the chapter content. Asked the overarching question, 'Were the peace treaties of 1919-1923 fair?'. Showed an example of deconstructing the question to include content, context, analysis and opinion in a written response. Now I have to grade the paper.
